LAVENDER BIRD: TB [A. Nicoll 2009] This charmer has been drawing attention ever since the first flower. The stems are tall and the flowers catch the eye with their delicate shades of purple and strong substance. 7 buds regularly. S. Very pale- purple wash over white. F. White ground with light purple dots and stitches stronger at edges. Bds gold with white tip. Sweet fragrance.
MARY GLENN: TB [A. Nicoll 2010] A slightly shorter TB with plenty blooms and good branching. S. White. F. Pale blue washed violet. Lightly ruffled. Bds. Golden yellow with white tip. Slight sweet fragrance. Named in memory of my mother. Blue and white being her colours.
TEMPESTUOUS: TB [A Nicoll 2009] A dark beauty. S. Deep violet. F. Black with fine vivid- purple edge. Bds, purple based with brilliant yellow tips to hairs.
WHO DARES: TB [A. Nicoll 2009.] S. Strong red, lighter in centre. F. Strong purple-red plicata pattern on yellow ground. White area around beard. Bds have white base and gold tips. Broad and lightly ruffled falls.
FRESH AND FRUITY : TB [D. Nicoll 2011] This just makes the mouth water, hints of mango or ripe pineapple. S. Light orange yellow merging to greenish yellow at edges. F. Strong greenish yellow lifted by the red orange beard. Spicy fragrance.
ISOTOPE: TB [D. Nicoll 2011] Heavily laced with strong substance. An icy crystalline appearance to the lovely blooms S. White with a faint touch of pale purple. White falls have a trace of purple at the edges. Light blue tips on orange yellow bds.
MT. STARVEAL: TB [D. Nicoll 2009] S. Pale purple. F. Strong red purple with light purple edges. Orange bds. This broody purple mountain overlooks the Waimea plains from behind our garden and the iris reflects the changing mountain colours.
PACK ICE: TB [D. Nicoll 2011] Straight from the glaciers comes this icy white. S. White with a trace of light blue at base. F. White with a trace of light blue in the hafts. Orange bds have an icy blue tip.
PIKE RIVER: TB [D. Nicoll 2011] In the Paparoa ranges of the West Coast of New Zealand the Pike River flows through the steep ranges covered in dense evergreen forests protecting the Coal Fields from intruding man. This lovely dark purple iris broods on the loss of the 29 miners in the Pike River Mine disaster of 2011.
RICHMOND DEVIATION: TB [D. Nicoll 2011] S. Grey-red. F. Light Purple-red, lightening again at edges. The creamy yellow and white veined hafts either side of the medium orange beard with extended spike lead into the glowing centre of the bloom.
RUBY BAY: TB [D. Nicoll 2011] S. Deep red. F. Dark red. Cheerful orange beard. Ruby Bay is a popular holiday and picnic place close to Richmond. Cockles can be found at low tide on the gently sloping beach and there are great views looking back to Nelson city and even D’urville Island in the Marlborough Sounds. The iris has a strong sheen over the falls adding to the overall effect.
To purchase Irises:- Our irises come direct to you from the grower. They are supplied bare rooted, not in pots. The irises are field grown to New Zealand conditions and are selected for hardiness and flowering ability. Supply is in early December, February and March.
